Ten top tips to control your home energy consumption

Whether this is the first time you’ve ever worked from home or you’re a seasoned remote worker, this will hopefully have something for you. So, here we go…

  1. Don’t heat the whole apartment! Sounds obvious right? But if everyone is working in one or two rooms, you don’t need to heat the empty ones.

  2. Keep the temperature constant. Set your thermostat for 18-19 degrees for a comfortable temperature.

  3. Layer up before turning up. Every degree over 20 can add 10% to your heating bill.

  4. Have a blanket close to hand! Often your upper body is warm but feet and legs get cold while sedentary at a desk. Use a good old-fashioned blanket to keep your bottom half nice and warm.

  5. Don’t leave you work setup on standby. This is not only an energy saving tip but also a mental health one. Decide your finish time, switch off equipment and move onto the next phase of your day.

  6. Use this as the excuse to make sure all your light bulbs are energy efficient.

  7. Upgrade your equipment, delivery permitting! If your kit is on its last legs then chances are that it is running inefficiently and costing both the environment and your pocket more than necessary.

  8. Let the sunshine in. Get the positioning of your workspace right to allow you to open your curtains and let the light into your room and avoid using artificial light. With spring in the offing the sun will warm you as well as lift your mood!

  9. Make sure that you are taking advantage of any tax allowance that may be available to you as a result of working from home.

  10. If you are one of the 77% of renters who hasn’t switched your electricity in the past year then please do switch using the well-known switching sites or Energy Relief which allows you to save and donate £20 to a charity of your choice. The utilities you get from us are already on the best deal since we switch for you every year.
